Taking time off from Real Estate and enjoying a little R&R are necessary from time to time, even during this pandemic.
For this getaway I decided to take a friend that was visiting from California to see the beautiful Texas coast, so we drove to South Padre Island. She had been in Texas before, but not at the coast and considering how beautiful her part of the country is, I did not expect her to be too impressed, although I consider this city very beautiful too.
We arrived in South Padre at dusk on a Tuesday and stopped at one of the oldest restaurant-bars - Louie's Backyard, to enjoy some local food, drinks and the sunset.
The next day we took a walk on the beach and had to go to Brownsville, one of the small cities in the area, for personal business. Since I had been there many times before, I'm familiar with some of the local eateries and chose to take my friend to one of them to indulge in some Mexican food.
This restaurant, Mi Pueblito, is original from Matamoros, Mexico, and the family opened one in the US side a while back, when crossing the border for delicious food - after some immigration changes - was not easy anymore.
Walking into Mi Pueblito you get the feeling you are in Mexico. Its solid wood tables and chairs with colorful tablecloths, very typical of the country, gives me that impression.
They offer a full bar and a full menu, in addition to extremely friendly service. The ambiance was great and quiet, since it was early in the evening and in the middle of the week.
Our server brought us water and the menus with a smile - we could tell he was smiling under the mask- and enjoying his job.
At that time I had changed my way of eating from almost all plant-based, to include animal products, and I was eating a lot of chicken. I've gone back to the original diet since, but these dishes were worth it!
I ordered the chicken fajitas. They are usually served with onions and bell peppers and I asked them to add mushrooms, which they did. The fajitas were tender and savory and they were accompanied with the usual sides: cheese, pico de gallo, salsa and sour cream, and the most delicious homemade corn tortillas!
The plate was big enough for two meals, therefore I took about half home and enjoyed them the following day for breakfast.
My friend ordered sautéed fish, shrimp and a loaded baked potato, with a side of ranchero beans.
She got to take some of it home as well and enjoyed it later on, except the beans which didn't make the trip because I ate them!
If you are in the area, visit Mi Pueblito and try some of their tasty dishes. I travel to the Valley often and will definitely stop by again.
Be healthy, be happy.
